    ash wednesday

There are many views as to the historical record of Ash Wednesday.  I leave that for the historians.  To me, it is a significant day because it marks the beginning of a concentrated focus on Jesus, his life, his death, and his resurrection.  It also begins a special time of repentance and consecration to my Lord thru various activities.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of  Lent (which translates spring) and that's significant this year because it coincides with the Shawn Reidy Calendar for the first day of spring March 1st.  Needless to say I'm almost giddy this morning as I am in Springfield, MO and the weather is so nice that I went outside for my morning prayers.

Today I wear the ash cross upon my forehead.  It's funny to see people's reaction and wonder as you go through the day.  It is very humbling, but its good for me to do this because it reinforces my devotion to be identified with Christ.  If I am willing to do that with some ash on my head, how much more should I be ready to be identified in public with good works and loving compassion.

Father, thank you for your son Jesus who was not afraid to be identified with me in the most humiliating way... by becoming dust for me.  Today I renew my commitment to you.  I humble myself and become identified with you through obedience.

     "I shot my eye out!"

Maybe my favorite scene of any Christmas movie ever!   Ralphie is repeatedly told he will shoot his eye out if he got a Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas.  He does get a BB Gun on Christmas morning and he heads outside... first shot rechocets back and bam!  Hilarious.

Of course my favorite Christmas movie is Christmas Vacation!  It has been our ritual to watch it every year (preferably the night after Thanksgiving when we put up the tree).  Here's my must see movies/dvds each Christmas season:
    1.  Christmas Vacation (Griswald is my hero and my mentor!)
    2.  A Christmas Story
    3.  It's a Wonderful Life
    4.  Charlie Brown Christmas
    5.  The Bishop's Wife (Gary Grant)

honorable mention:  Scrooged (Bill Murray), Jingle all the Way (Govenor of California), Family Man (Nicholas Cage), Sound of Music (just seems Christmasy), The Santa Clause (Tim Allen)

How about you?  What's your favorite movie?  Favorite scene or character?

snakeskins.  have you ever seen the shed skin of a snake?  sometimes it still maintains the shape and everything... seems kinda nasty, eh?  but on the other hand, it represents something really cool.  snakes have an ability to change, adapt, and grow. in that process they shed their "old skin" so a new skin can form.

in my devotions this morning i thought about shedding skins.  how many times in my life i have shed "the skins" of things and periods in my life: the skin of innocence, the skin of ignorance, the skin of a former attitude or mindset.  i was awakened and realized the world is different than i thought, in that moment part of me died-i shed the skin-i grew-i adapted-and i moved on.  i look back on my journey of life and see skins along the path... and i thank God.

today i am more sure and more uncertain.  i am older and younger.  i am more dead and more alive.

    birthdays and amnesty

i celebrated my 41st birthday today-november 11th (i am writing this at 1am on the 12th).  last year my wife had this suprise trip to L.A. for my 40th and it was awesome.   i have decided to make every birthday an awesome event from now on, because you never know when it will be your last.
the cool thing about birthdays is they give you sort of an amnesty for 24 hours to spend money you don't have, do stuff you wouldn't usually do, go places out of the norm, and be selfish for a day.  i know i shouldn't think that way... but its kinda true.
the only person who gets away with more "stuff" than birthday people is the pregnant woman.  pregnant woman could commit any crime, including murder, and get off providing the trial occur while still in the pregnant mode and the judge a male.
so during my day of unbridled permission i went fishing with my boys, hit golf balls, saw the movie "jarhead"(notice my jarhead in the profile pic), had dinner with my wife, went shopping, hit starbucks twice, did barnes and noble, marble slabbed it, and walked along the river canal at bricktown.  it was pretty cool.
    a life thought:
one thing i've learned this last year is that i don't know half as much as i thought i did, and secondly i'm glad i don't and i realize it.
i love God, my wife, my kids, my mom, my grandma, and brother more than i ever have and that all i know for sure.
my wife prayed i would find my "niche" this year and i think she might be on to something, i just hope she knows what she's doing.
